So it seems to her new parents, John Coleman Peter Sarsgaard and his wife, Kate Vera Farmiga , at the start of Jaume Collet-Serra's immaculately plotted and photographed chiller, Orphan , one of the best entries in the cute-as-a-button-psycho-demon-child-from-hell subgenre. A beautiful 9-year-old Russian-born orphan, Esther is the perfect cure for the traumatized couple, whose marriage has taken a few body blows, including the death of their unborn child. Esther fits right in with her new siblings, the sometimes surly prepubescent Daniel Jimmy Bennett and the radiant Max Aryana Engineer , a profoundly deaf 5-year-old girl who falls under Esther's thrall.
What's not to love? Esther creates extraordinary, sophisticated paintings. This was filmed, and part of it is featured as a deleted scene on the DVD. According to the Estonian mental institute records, Esther was born on April 20, the date of Hitler's birthday. The climax of the film is similar to the climax of "The Ring Two" In that film, Naomi Watts' character gets out of the well and suddenly, Samara, the antagonist, calls her "Mommy," to which Watts replies to her, saying," I am not your fucking mommy.
In this film, Vera Farmiga's character gets out of the water and Esther says, "Please don't kill me, Mommy," and Farmiga's character replies, "I'm not your fucking mommy! To add to the surrealism of Kate's nightmare at the beginning, Peter Sarsgaard plays both John and the delivery doctor. Near the end of the film, Esther is revealed to have Hypopituitarism.
This is a real disorder that is as the film states is "rare". However, there is treatment available such as growth hormone injections for children to grow at a normal rate. However, the film leaves out that people with this condition are required to take cortisone medications otherwise they could die. Esther would need to be taking pills daily or the injections weekly. She is never seen doing either. This story is very similar to the story of Natalia Barnett.
She was adopted from Ukraine at age 6 by Michael and Kristine Barnett. After several months with her new family, they went to court and had her date of birth changed to She has a form of dwarfism, but they asserted that she was older than her records indicated.
The scene in which Esther sinks to the bottom of the pond was shot to mimic the scene of Leonardo Dicaprio's body floating to the bottom of the ocean in Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio was a producer for this film.
This is the second movie where actress Vera Farmiga plays a mother to a deranged child. The first movie was Joshua In the scene where it is panning the hallway and showing a black light flashing on and off and it the camera pans across the fish tank. You can see in the reflection what her picture looks like in the black light before its ultimately revealed.
Kate yells at Esther and Max for playing near the pond fearing that the ice could break and Esther could fall in. Which foreshadows Esther's death later in the movie.
The Hand that Rocks the Cradle also has a dramatic scene involving a greenhouse, a scene where the villain rages in a toilet cubicle, and effectively is a film about a femme fatale trying to take another woman's family. There are many elements in the movie that foreshadow the plot twist that reveal that Esther is really an adult: When Kate tries to talk to Esther about the birds and the bees after witnessing she and John having sex Esther says that she is aware that adults have sex.
When the school bully Brenda at Daniel and Esther's school makes fun of Esther for the clothes she wears and for carrying a bible she sheds no tears. Esther claims to never have played a piano later she plays the piano perfectly implying that she has been playing the piano for a long time.

As a result of her condition, her abuse and her father's cruel words, she is full of rage and will do anything to gain what she believes is the perfect family: one where she serves as beloved wife and mother. Consequently, she chooses to keep up the pretense of being a child while trying to find "love" with her adoptive fathers.
The original trailer was edited because some people found the line offensive when taken out of context. An article archived here explains it. The original trailer can no longer be found anywhere on the surface world-wide web, it would seem. Another movie starring Vera Farminga and dealing with similar subject matter is Joshua Sign In. What is "Orphan" about? Is "Orphan" based on a book? Where does the story take place? Where is Esther from? Where is Estonia? Is Aryana Engineer Max really deaf? What is the poem inscribed on Jessica's memorial marker? Why does Esther always wear a ribbon around her neck and wrists? What happened to Daniel? Why was Kate so upset about the white roses that Esther brought her? What happened in Kate's past that made both John and her therapist suspect her?
How does the movie end? I saw the alternate ending. What does it imply? Their chase takes them to a frozen pond, where Kate and Leena struggle on the ice.
Max grabs Leena's snubnosed revolver trying to shoot her, but misses, causing the ice to shatter. Leena and Kate fall into the freezing water. Kate crawls out of the hole, followed by Leena.
Leena begs for her life and addressing Kate as her mother--while hiding a knife behind her back. Kate responds: "I'm not your fucking mommy! In an alternate ending on some DVD versions, there is no fight at the lake and Leena's neck is not broken.
She comes downstairs to sweetly greet the police in the same manner as she did the Colemans. It is left up to the audience to decide what happens afterwards. Kate arrives back at her home, with the awful knowledge that Esther is a psychopathic killer, and is greeted with the gruesome sight of her husband shredded on the floor.
Her daughter Max is still somewhere in the house, so she has no choice but to move on. Esther has armed herself with John's revolver, and after some stealthing around, she blasts Kate through the arm. This was either done to make her look more scary, or so that it doesn't upset Sensitive Mothers when they see Kate hitting her - but either way it is a mistake. Esther is by far at her most creepy when she looks like a nine year old.
Kate is walking on the roof, so can't get to her, but signs frantically to the deaf girl to hide. This advice proves too late, and Esther looms into view, beheading the toddler with a pair of shears. Well no, that doesn't really happen, the cute kid is of course invulnerable, and Kate saves her by smashing through the glass house roof and squashing Esther to the floor. They retrieve the gun and then succumb to the oldest horror cliche there is - they just walk off and leave her, assuming she is dead.
Of course this means we'll get another action scene in a moment or so, so why am I complaining? Well really just because the rest of the film was good enough that it deserved a more original ending. What we get though is Mummy Coleman grappling with a knife wielding Esther over an icy lake. Mom gets slashed to ribbons, but Max saves the day by awkwardly pointing the revolver in both of her tiny hands and shooting willdy at Esther.
She misses of course, but the bullet cracks the ice, dunking both women into the frigid water. Esther is still stabbing away, but Kate gets to the surface first and hauls herself onto the ice.
Esther surfaces beneath her, almost frozen, and falls back on her charm to save the day.
