The hobbit who is beorn

Gandalf introduces himself and Bilbo to Beorn, who at first does not appear too friendly. Gandalf cleverly tells a suspenseful tale about how they killed the Great Goblin and escaped from the Goblins and Wargs, however, and Beorn grows more sympathetic and interested in the dwarves. Gandalf introduces them, and Beorn invites the entire company to stay for supper. He tells them stories of the dangerous forest of Mirkwood, which they must pass through on their journey east.

As Bilbo and the dwarves go to bed, Gandalf warns them that they must not go outside until morning. During the night, Bilbo hears growling outside and wonders whether it is Beorn in the shape of a bear. When Bilbo awakes the next morning, Gandalf is gone and does not return until evening. Evidence of a great gathering of bears the night before had led Gandalf back to the woods where they had earlier encountered the Wargs, and he implies that Beorn has gone there, too.

Beorn is a man who lives beyond the Misty Mountains. Beorn is a little prickly and not too fond of strangers, but he absolutely, totally hates goblins. Thanks to his the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend phew! He had a magic-like effect on his animals, who seem more intelligent and strong than other animals. He kept bee pastures and spent his nights patrolling the woods and mountains in the form of a bear.

He was wise and powerful, possessing incredible strength and durability, to the point that Azog did not risk facing him even with his band despite his target, Thorin and company, being so close. He was fairly decent, allowing Thorin and Company to stay at his home for a short while, offering sanctuary from the Goblins.

Beorn was also vengeful; when Thorin was fatally wounded in battle Beorn stormed the goblin ranks, rescues Thorin and then returns, destroying the goblins and killing Bolg himself. His appearance in the films is quite different than his description in the book and portrayals in other media.

In the films, he has greyish-brown hair, a forked beard, shackles on his left arm, and a mane of hair growing as a ridge down the length of his back. Beorn mentioned his fellow Shape Shifters , who once lived in the mountains before Azog the Defiler came down from the north and killed or enslaved many of his people for sport. Beorn escaped the terrible fate of his kin explaining the shackles on his arm , and claims that he is the last of his kind.

He gives them horses to reach Mirkwood and provides escort to protect them from roaming Orcs. Beorn appears to be aware of the dark presence in Dol Guldur as he knows of an alliance between the Orcs of Moria and the Necromancer , whom he calls the Sorcerer, in Dol Guldur.

Packs of Orcs have been seen gathering in the fortress with their numbers increasing every day. Beorn also knows that the Necromancer is not what he seems to be and that dark and foul things are drawn to his power, not to mention Azog's allegiance to him. He also heard word spread of the dead rising and walking near the High Fells of Rhudaur. Beorn was known to be incredibly wise and powerful. There was no doubting his durability and strength, whether he may be in his human or bear form.

The name "Beorn" was inspired by "beorn," an Old English term for man and warrior. Tolkien may have gathered inspiration from these heroes when coming up with the character of Beorn.

Beorn portrayed in his human form. In this video game, the initial encounter with Beorn was omitted from the game's storyline. In the game, Beorn only appears in his bear form. In the strategy game, the Beornings make an appearance as trainable units.

Grimbeorn's lodge can be seen in the Vales of Anduin as a starting point for all Beorning classes. Grimbeorn himself makes a short appearance in the game. Show contributors This page has been seen 33, times. Created by esrbl.
