Obesity happens when someone like this have no will or self control to stop and look at himself and realize that he's getting dangerously huge, because in the back of his mind, he's thinking; it's a disease, and that he can't control it. Now, I fully am aware that some individual's bodies work differently, whereas each person burn fat differently. But still, I feel like he could have done something about it even before he has gotten this huge. But fortunately for him, he finally realized it and has gotten help.
